Transfer from road to rail

The transfer of freight traffic from road to rail is a decisive step towards a more environmentally sound and socially compatible transport policy. Rail freight transport uses less energy and causes less air pollution and noise than transport by lorries. The Traffic Transfer Act demands that two years after the opening of the Loetschberg base tunnel at the latest, i.e. in 2009, only 650,000 lorries are allowed to cross the Swiss Alps per year. That is less than half the number of lorries in 2000.

Alpine Initiative

The Alpine Initiative is a Swiss asscociation. In 1989 the association launched the popular initiative "for the protection of the Alpine region from transit traffic", that was accepted on the 20th February 1994 by a majority of both the Swiss population and the cantons.
